Here is my Digital Spaces Map.

So what did I find when I looked at my digital spaces?
Professional Space
When it comes to using digital spaces professionally, I found that I am more of a resident than a visitor. Initially, I thought this might be because certain tasks that are asked of me from my district. However, the more I thought about it, the more I realized I would still be using digital spaces to complete my work- I just might choose different programs than the ones provided. Even though some of these programs, like Microsoft Teams or OneNote, aren't as popular among most school districts, they have really grown on me. I find myself using OneNote to house and organize anything related to my teaching. It also makes it really easy to share and collaborate with others. All this communicating and storing information forces me to leave a digital footprint.
Personal Space
After looking closer at how I use digital spaces in my personal life, I found that I am more of a visitor than a resident, but this wasn't surprising to me. Don't get me wrong, I am a social person! But I don't particularly enjoy talking or writing about myself especially in situations with a large audience- you know, like the internet. I am an over-thinker and private which doesn't lend itself to sharing your thoughts on the internet. The digital spaces where I do reside are ones which allow me to communicate or share with those that are close to me.
Who knows? Maybe I will start sharing more of myself on a public forum, but for now, I am content being professional resident and a personal visitor.

Hi Nicole,
ReplyDeleteI completely understand how you probably feel about sharing more about yourself in the internet with people close to you, rather than the public. I feel the same and have been starting little by little. Perhaps this blog, your Twitter Account and other digital platforms will allow you to share more about yourself.
I totally understand about the sharing of oneself with others in a public forum. I know millions of people use Facebook, Insta, Snapchat, blogs, etc. and freely write about themselves, however, I am still not sold that it isn't just Narcissism from a generation starved of parental attention as a kid. People often ask us to step outside our comfort zone, but humans are hard-wired to seek comfort and safety, so it's unnatural to do so. Further, it's hard to change the mindset that we had drilled into us that we need to be need to be careful in making a digital footprint. I felt like my learning over the years told me not to make a traceable footprint at all, but perhaps today's society is saying go ahead and wear you best shoes.
ReplyDeleteHow awesome is it to discover this?! I completely understand and respect how different you are in personal life versus professional. And many of the outlets on your map are the ones that I completely forgot about :) I love how outgoing and personal you are in real life, and how reserved and quiet you are on social media - it makes me value you even more (if that was at all ever possible!). I loved getting to know this side of you!
