Social Media

Alright, I get it- I'm behind the eight ball when it comes to using social media.  Using social media is just not something I am comfortable with in my personal life, let alone professionally.  However, I recently read an article from Fortune that has made me think about approaching social media a little differently.

The article I read was 5 social media skills millennials lack (notice the lack of capitalization in the title of the article- I think it was intentional).  Now, I am not particular fond of nor do I like to think of myself as a millennial, but that is how society has identified my generation.  So I thought it fitting to take a closer look at where I am going wrong as a millennial and how to up my social media game.

There were a couple of points that stood out to me when it came to my own relationship with social media.  The first was "knowing when to hit the bleep button", which basically means knowing when to keep your personal thoughts to yourself.  The quote that stood out to me, "millennials sometimes fail to appreciate that personal profiles can have professional repercussions", and this is one of the reasons I have made the choice to avoid posting too much if anything on social media.  Don't get me wrong- spreading hate is not something I support, but I have changed very much from the time I opened my first social media account until now. Sharing too much on social media is always something I have been cautious about, but that was not always the case for some people my age.  There are many people who think they can easily delete or erase posts from the internet and that just isn't true.  I learned from completing a data mine on myself and reading about the data mining of others that even when you think you have deleted accounts or profiles, they are still out there...somewhere.

The other part of the article that resonated with me was a millennial's ability to truly understand how to use social media for professional gain. This is where I feel like I should be using trying to improve my use of social media.  Now that I am a parent, I appreciate when my children's teachers share activities that are being done in the classroom.  Social media and other digital tools are great ways to share with parents and the community what happens within the schools.  There really are great ways to create a digital tattoo that showcase the great work of the students and the teachers in schools.  By posting regularly on to social media, I can communicate with families and create an digital resume, especially if I begin to master the multi-network integration and professional networking.
